HOW DO AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS (ASHP) WORK?

Air source heat pumps (ASHP) come in two main types: Air-to-Air and Air-to-Water. The most common type, air-to-water systems, absorb heat from the outside air and transfer it into water, providing heating and hot water for your home. Air-to-air systems circulate warm air throughout your property. These systems offer reliable, energy-efficient heating year-round, even in the Scottish Borders' colder months.

If you're interested in funding options, the Home Energy Scotland grant and loan scheme offers financial support for heat pump installations and other energy efficiency improvements.

WILL I QUALIFY FOR THE HES FUNDING?

Air source heat pumps are part of a government initiative to support those transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable heating solutions. The scheme offers financial incentives for each unit of heat generated. You may be eligible for funding through the Home Energy Scotland program (HES) if you're based in the Scottish Borders or surrounding areas. We encourage you to explore our site for full details on eligibility criteria and how to apply for this valuable support. Air source heat pumps provide a reliable, energy-efficient heating solution for residents in the Scottish Borders and surrounding areas, no matter the season.

DO AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS WORK IN WINTER?

There's a common misconception that air source heat pumps stop working in winter. However, these systems remain highly effective even in colder temperatures. They absorb and transfer heat from the outside air—similar to how a sponge absorbs moisture. Air source heat pumps can operate efficiently in temperatures as low as -25°C. Even with snow on the ground and temperatures around -10°C, the refrigerant gas in the system continues to absorb ambient heat, ensuring your home stays warm throughout the year.

GOVERNMENT FUNDING FOR AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS

Ready to make your home more energy-efficient? You could receive up to £15,000 in funding through the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan Scheme. This includes a £7,500 grant for heat pump installations, with an optional interest-free loan of up to £7,500 to cover the rest. Rural areas? You're in luck—an extra £1,500 is available to help with installation costs, increasing your grant to £9,000!

Here's who qualifies:

  • Must be a homeowner with an existing property in Scotland serving as your primary residence

  • An MCS-certified installer must install the property

  • Landlords, businesses, and property developers are not eligible

  • Interested in replacing an old heat pump? While grants aren't available, you can still apply for an interest-free loan up to £7,500.
